The Azorean archipelago provide a diverse patrimony of caverns, due to its volcanic origin and the presence of congealed lava streams basaltic in nature,.

Over 200 grottos are known. They have a total length of a few decimal kilometers of subterranean channels, where grottos, caves and algares from volcanic origin as well as those formed through erosion, sometimes a combination of both, can be found.
